The Glow-Up That Ghosted Us (Until Now)
14 April 2026Most blokes’ relationship with skincare goes like this: there’s a bar of soap, there’s whatever was on special, and there’s a firm belief that good genes will handle the rest. Fair enough. Nobody sat you down and explained why any of it matters.
So here it is, minus the twelve-step routine and the jargon. Men’s skin has its own quirks, and three steps cover nearly all of them.
First, why does your skin play by different rules?
Testosterone makes your skin produce more oil, called sebum, and can make your pores appear larger. Men produce roughly double the sebum women do, which is why your face can feel greasy by lunch and why breakouts don’t politely retire after your teens. Your skin also has a lower pH, so it is more prone to blemishes.
Then there’s shaving. Every pass of the razor scrapes off a little of your skin’s protective barrier, and that’s what leaves you with razor burn, tightness, and the occasional ingrown hair.
Men’s skin runs about 20% thicker than women’s and holds off visible ageing for longer. Sounds like a win, and it is, right up until the damage shows. When it does surface, it tends to land deeper and be more stubborn, mostly thanks to years of sun. Which brings us to the step most blokes skip.
The three steps
- Cleanser
Soap is built to degrease pots and pans, and it treats your face the same way. It strips everything, including the oils your skin needs, then leaves it tight and irritated. A proper facial cleanser lifts sweat, grime, and excess oil without the scorched-earth approach. Morning and night, thirty seconds, rinse. Got a beard? It cleans the skin underneath too, which your face will thank you for. - Moisturiser
This is the step men resist hardest, usually because the word sounds like it belongs on someone else’s shelf. Moisturiser for men puts water back into the skin that shaving and cleansing just took out, and tops up the barrier so your face isn’t tight and flaky by mid-morning. A lightweight fluid sinks in fast and leaves no grease behind. Use it after cleansing, morning and night. - Sunscreen
The one that matters most, and the one men skip most. Australia runs some of the highest UV levels on the planet, and men are far less likely to wear SPF, which is a big reason they carry higher rates of skin cancer and sun spots.
This one goes double if you work outdoors. A day on the tools is hours under the worst of it, and the damage stacks up shift after shift. Whether your day’s spent chopping, coding, concreting or carting, the sun clocks on when you do, so SPF isn’t optional.
Sunscreen every morning is the single biggest thing you can do for your skin, full stop. It holds off the lines and leathering that show up down the track. Moisturiser first, sunscreen over the top, every day, even when it’s cloudy.
That’s the routine: Cleanse, moisturise, protect. Two minutes in the morning, one at night, and your skin does the rest.
When you want to go a step further
The three steps keep your skin ticking over at home. Throughout the year, it pays to let someone do the deep work you can’t manage over a bathroom sink.
The Homme Energising Skin Treatment is 45 minutes of exactly that. A proper cleanse and exfoliation, a deep clean under warm steam that clears out the pores and blackheads left behind by shaving and soap, then a serum, mask, and moisturiser matched to your skin. There’s a massage through the middle. Most blokes are asleep by the time the mask goes on.
There are no cucumber slices or anything you need to feel weird about. You walk out with skin that’s had a full service instead of a quick hose-down, and you’ll know exactly what to keep doing at home.
Want a hand picking products that suit your skin and won’t feel like homework? That’s what we’re here for. Come and see us at Le Spa Beauté & BE, and we’ll set you up with a routine you’ll stick to. When you’re ready for the deep-clean version, the Homme treatment’s here for that too.
